Spotify's radio-like listening app, Spotify Stations, is shutting down

Spotify has already conducted several experiments, including one with its radio-like listening app Spotify Stations, which has been accessible for free and premium members since 2018. However, the test is over now, and according to 9to5 Google, Spotify has begun notifying customers that the app will be discontinued on May 16th.

Stations app was created for folks who preferred a more radio-like experience versus searching for music or creating their own playlists. Stations debuted in Australia in 2018 before expanding to the United States in 2019.

Spotify’s Stations, just like the radio, started playing as soon as you launched the app, and while users could switch between their favourite stations/playlists, there was no ability to choose individual music or artists, and returning to a station would start immediately where it had left off.

A Spotify spokesperson in a statement to TechCrunch said, “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of experiments to create better-listening experiences for our users.” The spokesperson added, “Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience, and others serve only as important learning tools. Our Spotify Stations Beta was one of those tests. We will be sunsetting the current feature, but users will be able to easily transfer their favourite stations and enjoy a similar radio experience directly within the Spotify app.”

Spotify has not explained why it decided to shut down Stations, but it has stated that customers may relocate all of their favourite stations to the Spotify radio in the main Spotify app to continue listening to them.

While the firm does not take the discontinuation of services lightly, it claims that Spotify Radio offers a similar listening experience to Stations and that listeners may use it instead.
