Motorola might be releasing not one, but two intriguing smartphones in China next month. In a Weibo post, Motorola teased the first, which promises to be one of the world’s first phones with a 200-MP camera. A third-generation foldable Razr might also be included. On Weibo, Motorola’s general manager Shen Jin teased the upcoming foldable with a mysterious teaser that looked to show a silhouette of a smartphone unfolding.
The Motorola smartphone with the 200-MP camera is said to be being built under the codename “Frontier,” and it has been leaked several times in recent months. WinFuture released multiple renders of the gadget in January, along with a very detailed list of specifications. The phone’s main camera will apparently use the 200-megapixel sensor unveiled by Samsung in September, along with a 50-megapixel ultrawide, a 12-megapixel telephoto, and a 60-megapixel selfie camera.
A 6.67-inch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate is also rumoured, as is a 4,500mAh battery with 125W wired fast-charging and 50W wireless fast-charging capability. In March, a snapshot of the phone was supposedly released to Weibo.
Meanwhile, late last year, Motorola’s Shen Jin seemed to confirm that the company was working on a third-generation Razr, and photos of the gadget surfaced earlier this month. The phone still has a clamshell form, but it may feature a revised design that removes the previous device’s big “chin” and shifts the power button and fingerprint sensor to the right side of the phone.
However, the most significant update for the new Razr looks to be on the inside, with the gadget set to be powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 CPU, which was just introduced a few days ago. The same chip is likely to be used in the 200-megapixel cameraphone. It’s a significant upgrade for Motorola’s foldable, which previously relied on Qualcomm’s midrange CPUs, which resulted in poor performance.
There’s no information on if or when each phone will be released outside of China. When Motorola unveiled the Edge Plus, it did so under the moniker Edge X30 in China towards the end of 2021, only to bring it to the US earlier this year. If Apple takes a similar route here, these new gadgets might be available in the United States by the end of 2022.
